Published in Frontiers in Public Health, the paper shines a spotlight on the growing crisis of childhood obesity – a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes – and calls for coordinated efforts from governments, schools, healthcare providers, and communities to address it.

The authors, representing youth voices from around the globe, outline a series of key priorities:

  • Better access to healthy foods – Making nutritious, affordable options available in schools and communities.
  • Increased opportunities for physical activity – Creating safe, accessible spaces for children to be active every day.
  • Stronger education and awareness programs – Teaching children, parents, and communities about healthy habits and diabetes prevention.
  • Policies that promote long-term health – Including regulations on unhealthy food marketing targeted at children.

The group emphasizes that the COVID-19 pandemic worsened the problem, with more sedentary lifestyles and increased unhealthy eating habits. Without immediate action, rates of obesity and related conditions, including diabetes, are expected to rise sharply in the coming years.

“This manuscript is an inspiring example of youth leadership in public health advocacy,” said Michael Burton, DRIF CEO. “By elevating young voices, we can create solutions that resonate with and empower the next generation.”

The Young Leaders Advocacy Group hopes this publication will serve as a roadmap for policymakers, educators, and community leaders committed to reversing the trend of childhood obesity and reducing the global burden of impaired blood sugar and diabetes.
