Together, we can change lives through cutting-edge research and groundbreaking treatments for type 1 diabetes.
What is Diabetes Awareness Month?
November is dedicated to raising awareness about the daily challenges faced by millions living with diabetes and the urgent need for a cure. The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (DRIF) is committed to pioneering research that will make this vision a reality.
Why It Matters:
- Nearly 40 million Americans live with diabetes.
- 1.5 million more are diagnosed every year.
- More than $410 billion is spent on diabetes-related health care annually in the United States, and the cost continues to rise.
- Type 1 diabetes is a chronic, life-altering condition, and sometimes fatal disease with no cure.
Together, we can drive research forward and create hope for a cure.

Spotlight on Research: Relentless Pursuit of a Cure
At DRIF, finding a cure for diabetes is personal, urgent, and driven by science. Founded by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, we are 100% committed to transforming lives through innovative research.
Our groundbreaking work includes:
- Islet Cell Transplantation: We’ve demonstrated that islet cell transplantation can eliminate the need for insulin injections in people with T1D, offering a higher quality of life.
- Beta Cell Regeneration: We are exploring ways to harness the pancreas’s natural ability to regenerate, aiming to restore insulin production without transplantation.
- Immune Modulation: We’re developing new techniques to prevent the immune system from attacking insulin-producing cells, stopping diabetes before it starts.
Each milestone brings us one step closer to a cure.

Learn More About Our History
Since 1971, the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation has been on a relentless quest for a cure. Our story began with a group of parents searching for answers when the very concept of children with diabetes was thought to be an anomaly. Today, cure-focused scientists at the DRI, in multidisciplinary collaboration with experts around the world, continue to change the paradigm in diabetes research and our ability to treat and ultimately prevent and cure this heinous disease.
