North America’s Building Trades Unions’ Unwavering Commitment to a Cure

(June 2017) — For decades, the Diabetes Research Institute and Foundation have had a strong and dedicated partner in North America’s Building Trades Unions (NABTU). To date, the men and women of NABTU have raised more than $53 million to help the DRI find a cure. At the 2017 Legislative Conference, NABTU President Sean McGarvey reiterated their ongoing commitment to raise an additional $6 million.

“North America’s Building Trades Unions are proud of our efforts to support the exciting and groundbreaking research being conducted by the Diabetes Research Institute,” said Sean McGarvey, President of North America’s Building Trades Unions in a recent statement. “And we will continue these efforts especially in light of the fact that DRI has made some very exciting advances that have moved us closer to a cure for diabetes.”

To raise funds for the cause, NABTU organizes a number of events throughout the year as part of their Blueprint for Cure campaign, which includes the Labor of Love & Softball Slam, and their cornerstone initiative, DAD’s Day (Dollars Against Diabetes). For D.A.D.’s Day, each participating Council or Local Building Trades Union organizes its own event – which can range from bowling and softball tournaments to golf outings and much more. The union members dedicate their time to get sponsorships, registrations, raffle prizes, and volunteer participation – which all lead to thousands of dollars for research.

Aside from financial support, the Institute’s state-of-the-art research facility in Miami, FL, was constructed by the hands – and hearts – of union skilled craft construction professionals – and for that and every effort since, we are forever grateful to NABTU and their unwavering and continued support.

The men and women of NABTU – in their workmanship and in their longstanding relationship with the DRI – always live up to their motto: Value on Display. Every day.
