Miami, FL (May 13, 2009) – Mathias D. Brendel, M.D., Ph.D., is one of the pioneers in islet cell transplantation and the regenerative treatment strategies for diabetes. He completed his fellowship at the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and has been appointed as the first tenured professorship at the University of Dresden in Germany.
At the University of Dresden, he will be responsible for establishing the clinical islet transplant program and developing future strategies for cell therapy and regenerative medicine for the treatment of diabetes.
“The four years that I spent at the DRI in Miami were a wonderful and rich experience in medicine, science and personal life. Moreover, they provided and corroborated the foundations of my clinical and scientific interests, which have now resulted in my recruitment to the University of Dresden. I am extremely happy, to continue the fight against diabetes and I am blessed, to continue the interaction with the leading scientists and friends at the University of Miami’s DRI,” says Dr. Brendel.
Dr. Brendel has published more than 100 papers in this field. He is currently vice-president of the AIDPIT study group of the EASD, coordinator of clinical and experimental islet cell transplantation at the German Islet Transplant Center, and coordinator at the International Islet Transplant Registry.
