Mele (formerly Kronowitt) was the first president of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation nearly 40 years ago
December 2009 – With great sadness, the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation mourns the loss of Micki Mele, one of the founding members of the organization.
When her young daughter, Tracy, was diagnosed with diabetes, Micki and her former husband, Bob Kronowitt, began searching for answers and information. They were appalled at the lack of research going on. At that time, the statistics weren’t encouraging for children diagnosed early in their lives. Micki wanted to change that.
Together, they identified a small but promising research program at the University of Miami, led by Dr. Daniel Mintz. They enlisted the support of five other local families affected by type 1 diabetes. Dr. Mintz provided the hope they were all searching for. They put their faith in him and believed he could provide a better future for their children….for all children touched by this devastating disease.
Together, they formed an organization that became the Foundation that funds the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Micki was the group’s first president.
Never in their wildest imaginations did Micki and the group dream that this very small organization would grow, and grow, and continue to grow! Thanks to the kindness, generosity and hard work of many people, that very small program became a world leader in cure-focused research.
Micki’s dedication to the mission was unwavering and full-time – meeting with people, educating them and raising money to support research. She led with intelligence, strength, diplomacy and sincerity. These are the qualities that defined Micki’s entire life.
Micki believed in getting involved, in making a difference, and she did everything with her heart and soul. That’s what we loved about her.
Micki Mele was our friend. We will miss her….her smile, her self-assurance, her warmth, her grace.
