DRI Awarded Several Grants to Further Cure-Focused Research Initiatives

The Diabetes Research Institute has been awarded a number of major grants to further several exciting initiatives, including increasing cell supply using pig islets, expanding stem cell studies with our "oxygen sandwich," and developing small molecule-based drugs to block autoimmunity and prevent rejection.

Pre-Transplant Drug Regimen Promotes Long-Term Insulin Independence

The DRI's clinical cell transplant team, in collaboration with researchers at the University of Minnesota, have reported  in the American Journal of Transplantation that long-term insulin independence can be achieved in islet transplant patients who receive potent anti-rejection drugs during the pre-transplant phase.

Revolutionary Oxygen-Generating Biomaterial Enhances Islet Survival

DRI scientists have developed a technique to provide critical oxygen for maintaining the survival of insulin-producing cells. The results of a DRI study, published in the prestigious journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS), represents a major step in our ability to keep insulin-producing cells healthy after transplantation. This development also plays a key role toward developing an alternative site to house insulin-producing cells.

A Population of Stem Cells May Replace Powerful Anti-Rejection Drugs to Prevent Rejection and Improve Outcomes in Transplant Patients

New findings from a transplant study led by scientists from the DRI and a DRI Federation center at Xiamen University in China shows that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) may be able to replace a powerful anti-rejection drug in transplant patients. The results of this study were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and may offer new approaches to transform the future of clinical transplantation.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HOT) May Affect Onset and Progression of Type 1 Diabetes

DRI scientists report that findings from a new study show hyperbaric oxygen therapy helped to prevent the onset or slowed the progression of diabetes in experimental models. In the study, published in the July 2012 issue of Diabetes, HOT also appeared to protect beta cells and stimulate their growth.
