Don Strock Diabetes Golf Classic
May 9, 2012
Former Miami Dolphins quarterback Don Strock led 150 golfers onto the courses at Miccosukee Golf and Country Club for the 29th Annual Don Strock Diabetes Golf Classic, presented by Miami Seaquarium. After hitting the links, players enjoyed a cocktail reception and dinner program, during which Strock gave accolades to Tournament Chairman Bruce Fishbein and his hard-working committee, composed mainly of members of the produce industry. Proceeds surpassed $125,000 for the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI,) located at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
“As of today, this event has raised more than $2.5 million for the Diabetes Research Institute,” DRI Foundation COO Deborah Chodrow announced, eliciting cheers from the audience. “Because of your support, curing diabetes has been and will continue to be the DRI’s singular goal.” Chodrow then introduced a father and son, two of the millions of people whose lives have been affected by the disease.
“I want each of you to close your eyes and think of the worst thing that has ever happened to you, Dan Espinosa said. “That moment for me was when my son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.” After Dan expressed his confidence in “some of the top research in the world, which is happening right here in Miami,” 8-year-old Josh Espinosa added, “I’m just speechless! Thank you all for the money you give me and my friends (at the DRI)!”
Strock extended gratitude to celebrity participants including: current Miami Dolphins players Dan Carpenter, John Denney, and Brandon Fields; former Miami Dolphins players Eddie Hill, Larry Ball, Derrick Rodgers, Bob Brudzinski, Shawn Wooden, Darrell Malone, John Harris, Woody Bennett, Larry Little, Nat Moore and Jeff Cross; free agent Quadtrine Hill, and former professional Jai Alai player Joey Cornblitt, plus John “Footy” Kross and Scott “Froggy” Langley of Y-100.
Strock also gave special thanks to the event’s generous sponsors, many of which sign on year after year: Miami Seaquarium, Miccosukee Golf & Country Club, Miccosukee Championship, Coca-Cola, Nickey Gregory, LLC, The Produce Connection, The Lipman Companies, Global Perishable Services, LLP, American Fruit & Produce Corp., Next-Port, Inc., M & R Produce Distributors, C.H.
