Global Alliance of Scientists Assumes Critical Role in Advancing Research

The Diabetes Research Institute Federation, one of the most far-reaching global research alliances ever assembled, is assuming an increasingly critical role in the effort to find a cure for diabetes.

Through this global network of scientists, the DRI is moving forward with pilot clinical trials that would otherwise be stalled.

The DRI Federation is playing an increasingly important role in the effort to cure diabetes by circumventing political, regulatory and financial obstacles.

DRI Milan:
Stem Cells
from Body Fat Transformed

Our DRI Federation partners in Milan, Italy report cells from body fat may represent an excellent source of stem cells. In initial research, it was possible to transform at least a portion of these body fat (or adipose-derived) stem cells into insulin-producing cells.

Adipose-derived stem cells, or stem cells from fat, which can be easily obtained from patients, may offer an unlimited source of insulin-producing cells.

      DRI Argentina:
Combined Therapies Leads to Improved Islet Function

Results from a pilot clinical trial we're conducting with Federation partners in Argentina show that Hyperbaric Oxygen (HOT) therapy, combined with an infusion of a patient's own bone marrow-derived stem cells, led to improved islet function and metabolic control in patients with Type 2 diabetes.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is showing early signs of promise in diabetes research.

DRI Málaga:
Exploring the Natural Re-growth of Insulin-Producing Cells

The most recent addition to the DRI Federation is DRI-Málaga (Spain), where we're partnering with Dr. Antonio Cuesta-Muñoz to explore potential strategies to induce islet regeneration - the natural re-growth of insulin-producing cells.

A certain mutation that causes patients to have larger-than-normal beta cells and increased insulin secretion is being studied for its regenerative potential.

      DRI Researcher Publishes Review
in The New England Journal of Medicine

The DRI's Dr. Alessia Fornoni has published an invited editorial in the November 18 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Fornoni was asked by the prestigious journal to comment on the work of other scientists who are researching diabetic-related kidney disease.

In Case You Missed It...
Pursuing New Strategies to Prevent Transplant Rejection

The DRI is pursuing two new projects designed to prevent the rejection of transplanted islets without the need for immunosuppressive drugs that affect the entire body.

In the most recent issue of DRI Focus we talk with Dr. Alice Tomei who came to the DRI in May 2010 from the Institute of Bioengineering at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland and who is leading these efforts.
