Why he’s involved
He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on May 16, 2007.
How he helps
Sammy is a Diabetes Diplomat. When he was in second grade, Sammy helped his parents, Rosa and Beno Schechter, produce a DVD of his school’s Chanukah Celebration Show. He offered the video to his classmates for a donation with a goal of raising $1,000. To his surprise and delight, he raised $5,575.50.
In response to his father’s gentle warning that the money may only last 15 minutes in the DRI’s labs with such expensive equipment, Sammy replied, “Who knows…maybe just like in Chanukah, the miracle-cure could be found in those 15 minutes and last for a lifetime.”
Why the DRI?
“Living with diabetes is not easy. You have to prick your finger every day…I have to prick my fingers at least 10 times a day,” explained Sammy. “Everybody will be happy if the DRI finds the cure.”
