DRI researchers are testing the effects of hyperbaric oxygen on the recovery and regeneration of islet function.

Markers Detect Recurrent Autoimmunity in Organ Transplant Patients
Preliminary studies conducted by DRI scientists suggest we can predict the onset of recurrent autoimmunity – the process that causes diabetes – in patients who have received simultaneous kidney/pancreas transplants.

Immune cells (brown in color) surround  a pancreatic islet (white, round structure). The presence of the immune cells can be used to predict the onset of recurrent autoimmunity in transplant patients.

Research Seeks to Improve Nutrient Delivery to Insulin-Producing Cells
Our Tissue Engineering team has been awarded a grant to pursue encapsulating islets in microbeads to more efficiently deliver much-needed oxygen to the transplanted cells.

Applying Early Advances in T-Regulatory Cell Research to Type 1 Diabetes Model
Building on preliminary research that showed T-Regulatory cells can be harnessed to reverse general autoimmunity, DRI researchers will soon be testing the effectiveness of T-Reg therapy on type 1 diabetes.
